Non-outline Chinese animal paintings have to be simple, expressive and lively. It requires a lot of skill in using techniques. An artist has to be very experienced in using the brush. That is why pupils in Chinese painting usually learn animal painting at a later stage. Some never go through it if they decide to specialize in other topics before that.
