The Chinese brush is an amazing invention. The brush tip is made of animal hair. Each is trimmed to a shape for a specific use. When you press a brush on the paper, it expands and produces wider brushworks. When you lift the brush, the hair comes back together and the resulting brushworks using the tip will be thinner. The brush tip can also hold two or more colours so one touch on the paper will result in all the colours come out in the brushworks at the same time.
The non-outline method of brush painting makes use of all these techniques to produce very expressive artworks. It is usually painted on absorbent Chinese paper, called Xuan paper. The outline method is more cautious. We use mainly alum-sized Xuan paper for such paintings. Alum and gum has been applied to the absorbent paper to make the paper almost non-absorbent. Colours can be spread on this paper to create tones. It is a very skilful and meticulous method which requires patience and careful planning. If you want to purchase any of the artwork, please email Rebecca for further information.
