Calligraphy 1 one hundred long life 56x69cm In the long history of Chinese calligraphy, masters continued to create many artistic presentations of each style. The arrangement of brushstrokes in a single word is different from master to master. As a result, a Chinese word appears to have many forms. I have chosen a hundred forms of the word "long life" from the five styles of Chinese calligraphy to make up this artwork. In the background, I painted faint sillouettes of eight cranes. "Eight" in Chinese is very similar in sound to "hundred" and "crane" is a symbol of "long life". Eight cranes therefore symbolizes a hundred long life. An artwork of "a hundred long life" is very often used for celebrating someone's birthday, especially a birthday of advanced age, because we consider advance age is important and precious. It is a gift from heaven. |
