Calligraphy 18 No title by Li Shang Yin 58x59cm

A Shi from Tang Dynasty in Hsing (Xing) Shu on white mulberry paper mounted on maroon board

You can learn a lot from Li's poems about traditional practices, cultures and history. He always made use of these items to create the atmosphere to express his feeling. The setting of this poem is a small party with music and games. It was in the midst of these he discovered her. He did not even had time to express his love because in the last two lines there was a change of fortune. He had to submit to an official duty call to go far away. He had to leave with heavy regrets that he might not see her again. The most quoted lines are the third and the fourth "We may not be joined like a phoenix and fly to our destiny, but we have a deep connection and affection between us". They were beautifully written with passionate words. Many lovers in the modern time use these lines to declare their committments to each other.
