Not many people know about the art of Chinese knotting. Most will associate Chinese knots with the beautiful buttons on Chinese garments. Those of you who have travelled to China and brought back gifts like fans and pieces of jades would probably have knots tied to them. Traditionally, knots are made with silk cords. They are very decorative and are used in almost every aspect of life, on garments, on shoes, tied to fans, furniture, and gifts. In ancient time, cords were used to tie when buckles and clasps had not been invented and knots were created in the process of tying to enhance the outcome. Knots also formed a major part of a lady’s dowry. It is not an easy art to learn but is a very rewarding one. I have been practising knotting since I was a child. Now I use knots to make items suitable for this modern age, but I want to retain that Chinese touch, traditional, beautiful and elegant. I like to incorporate semi precious stones like jade, carnelian, fresh water pearls, garnet ……. in many of my knotting designs, especially the jewellery. If you want to purchase any of the following items, please email Rebecca for further information. Each knotting item has a number. Please quote the number when you contact me. Every knot has a meaning. The following are some of them.
In many of my jewellery I use a type of fastener manufactured by the Japanese. It works like a snap fastener. They are elegant and small, and makes it easier to put on a bracelet or a necklace and to take it off. Please click on a link below to see some of my knotting artworks.
